As a global phenomenon, freelancing is transforming how we work. It’s not just changing individual lifestyles, it’s driving economic growth across the world. Whether working in a coffee shop or from their home, freelancers are helping to create a more inclusive economy and changing the way that businesses think about talent.
As the freelance economy grows, it is creating new opportunities for people from all backgrounds to gain access to a global market for their skills. This is empowering individuals from marginalised groups including women, youth, refugees, and displaced persons to break down historic employment barriers.
Consequently, these individuals can earn more income and have better opportunities to support their families. Furthermore, they can also spend their well-earned incomes in their own communities, strengthening local economies.
At the same time, the global freelancing marketplace is reshaping traditional employment models as companies become more reliant on contractors rather than permanent employees. Moreover, these corporations are finding that freelancers provide them with the flexibility they need to adapt their products and services to changing consumer demands.
Currently, there are over 53 million freelance workers in the US alone, and this number is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. By 2027, it is predicted that freelancers will make up the majority of the workforce. In the past, freelancers have often been perceived as unemployed or underemployed workers, but in fact, they play an important role in the economy.
For example, many freelancers have specialised knowledge that allows them to help clients develop innovative products and services. They can also assist in building a company’s brand image, providing valuable marketing and sales support. Furthermore, freelancers are able to offer the same level of service as their full-time counterparts without the added costs associated with employee benefits.
However, despite these positive economic impacts, the freelance economy is facing significant challenges. In a recent survey, only 61% of freelancers reported that they were very or moderately encouraged by the future of their business. In addition, many respondents felt that governments were unhelpful to freelancers.
Development projects that support freelancers are key to addressing these challenges and building a more inclusive and sustainable economy. These projects can support the skills development that freelancers need to grow their business, while also promoting policies that support the freelance economy.
By doing so, we can ensure that freelancers have the opportunity to succeed and contribute to a prosperous future for all.
